Winstrol is the trade name for Stanozolol, an anabolic steroid that is widely used by both male and female bodybuilders and athletes. This steroid is available in both oral and injectable form and is one of the most popular anabolic steroids around today. In this article, I will be going over the history of Winstrol, its side effects and properties.
History of Winstrol
Stanozolol was first created in 1959 and a few years later was released under the trade name Winstrol by Winthrop Laboratories. Winstrol was developed to treat a range of different medical conditions such as anemia, osteoporosis, the treatment of burn victims and even helping children with stunted growth. Winstrol proved to be a very effective drug and was one of the few anabolic steroids to be FDA approved for human consumption.
Soon after its release athletes and bodybuilders started using Winstrol for performance and muscle building reason. Many people know the story of an Olympic sprinter from Canada, Ben Johnson, who tested positive for Winstrol at the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympic games and was stripped of his gold medal. Mr. Johnson completely dominated the 100m sprint, destroying his fellow racers as well as easily defeating Carl Lewis who everyone believed would win. Since the scandal involving Ben Johnson, numerous athletes over the years have tested positive for Stanozolol.
The abuse of this steroid by bodybuilders and athletes led to the FDA limiting the medical uses of Winstrol and by the 1980’s Winstrol became unavailable in America for many years. For many years Winstrol was still available in many countries around the world until the manufacturing of it was ultimately stopped. Later on, a company by the name of Ovation Pharmaceuticals would obtain the rights and start producing Winstrol again. Ovation Pharmaceuticals produced extremely high pharmaceutical grade Winstrol which help set the standard for other pharmaceutical companies to follow.
Today Winstrol is mostly produced and sold by underground labs as the pharmaceutical version is expensive and not easy to find.
Properties of Winstrol
As with steroids like Anavar and Masteron, Winstrol is a DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) derived anabolic steroid. In layman’s terms, Winstrol is DHT with two changes to the chemical structure which give it, its unique properties. The first change to the chemical structure at the A-ring where the 3-keto group is replaced by a pyrazole group. The second change is the addition of a methyl group at the 17th carbon classifying Winstrol as a C17-alpha alkylated anabolic steroid; this allows Winstrol to be absorbed into the bloodstream without being destroyed by the liver. Most oral steroids such as Dianabol, Anavar, Anadrol, and Turinabol to name a few, are also classified as C17-alpha alkylated anabolic steroids. Without the addition of a methyl group at the 17th carbon, oral steroids would be useless and have almost no effect.
The replacement of the 3-keto group with the pyrazole group is what reduces Winstrols androgenic rating (20) and increasing its anabolic rating (320).
Winstrol Side Effects
Winstrol is a mild steroid and will usually carry fewer side effects than most steroids. However, side effects are always still a possibility with this anabolic steroid. While most users see little to no side effects from Winstrol, some users will see side effects. Often side effects are dosage related and can usually be controlled by lowering the dosage or by taking certain medications.
Being a DHT derived anabolic steroid, Winstrol contains no estrogenic properties and therefore side effects such as gynecomastia, and excessive water retention is not possible. Excessive water retention usually causes an increase in blood pressure, and while high blood pressure is still possible while using Winstrol, the chances are far less than with most other anabolic steroids.
Androgenic side effects such as Acne and hair loss are all possible when using Winstrol. However, due to Winstrols low androgenic activity, the chances of these side effects occurring are small. However, males who are predisposed to MPB (male pattern baldness) should take caution when using any steroid, even Winstrol.
Winstrol’s low androgenic activity is what makes it a popular choice amongst females. A low androgenic rating makes the risk of virilization side effects smaller than when compared to other steroids. These side effects include deepening of the voice, increased body hair growth and an enlargement of the clitoris. Most females will only use a very low dosage of Winstrol to help prevent any of these side effects; however, some women may still get these side effects. If any virilization side effects occur, it is recommended that you stop using Winstrol immediately so that the side effects will hopefully disappear. Prolonged usage of Winstrol can lead to these side effects becoming permanent and irreversible.
Winstrol is known to cause significant HPTA suppression which will lead to low testosterone levels during the cycle. Low levels of testosterone can cause many side effects such as depression, anxiety, and erectile dysfunction. To prevent these side effects, most males will use a form of exogenous testosterone such as Testosterone Cypionate or Enanthate alongside Winstrol.
Many people are under the illusion that because Winstrol is a mild steroid, a post cycle therapy is not needed to restore natural testosterone production at the end of a cycle. This couldn’t be further from the truth, in fact, a study showed that a dosage as low as 10mg/day of Winstrol could lead to a 55% decrease in testosterone production after only two weeks. When a steroid cycle comes to an end, it is vital that a PCT (post cycle therapy) is started to help stimulate the production of natural testosterone. A PCT will not bring testosterone levels back to where they were before the cycle. It will, however, help speed up the process.
As with most oral steroids, Winstrol, especially the oral version, is toxic to the liver. Due to its liver toxicity, it is recommended never to use Winstrol for longer than eight weeks or to take large dosages. What is considered a large dosage varies from person to person, however, generally anything above 50mg is usually considered a large dosage. Liver supplements such as Liv52 or Milk Thistle may also be used to help and also be sure to drink plenty of water every day.
Due to the unique characteristics of Winstrol, it is mainly used for fat loss and cutting. Although many beginners use Winstrol for bulking, there are many other anabolic steroids available which would provide better results for this purpose.
Winstrol is typically used in a cycle alongside an injectable version of testosterone such as Testosterone Propionate. This type of cycle combined with cardio and proper diet often leads to excellent fat loss results and lean muscle mass and strength gains. More advanced users will often take multiple different steroids and fat burners in a cutting cycle. These cycles will often include anabolic steroids such as Winstrol, Testosterone Propionate and Trenbolone, and will consist of fat burners such as Clenbuterol and T3.
Winstrol is typically used at a dosage of 30 to 50mg’s/day for males for 4 to 6 weeks.
Winstrol can be purchased online or in person and is available in both pharmaceutical and underground lab grade. With Winstrol being one of the more popular steroids, it is often very easy to get ahold of. Currently, there are two different versions of Winstrol available, namely, oral and injectable. The injectable version is typically available in a water-based suspension. However, lately, some underground labs are producing an oil-based injectable version of Winstrol. The oral version remains the more popular choice, and thus most dealers will only stock Winstrol tablets. The oral version is often dosed at 10mg a tablet, there are, however, tablets dosed at 5mg, 20mg and even 50mg. The dose of each tablet will depend on the brand you are purchasing. Before attempting to buy Winstrol or any other type of anabolic steroid, always make sure first to know the laws of your country. Anabolic steroids are illegal without a doctors prescription in most parts of the world.
